Lumina was written for violinist Wendy Sharp, who first suggested the idea of a lullaby to celebrate the birth of her granddaughter and my son, born just a few months apart. From that seed grew music shaped by tenderness, hope, and the fragile wonder of new beginnings. The piece took form through a close collaboration with Wendy, whose artistry and insight shaped its character. One of her suggestions — to let the ending breathe and stretch — became an important part of the work’s voice. Our process also included many conversations (and more than a little struggle!) as we searched for just the right title, until Lumina finally revealed itself. Though rooted in light, the music does not shy away from shadow — the worries and uncertainties that live alongside hope. Lumina moves between fragility and strength, between darkness and radiance, always returning to light that is gentle, resilient, and enduring.
